Willis Re adds ILW, ILS, property retro broking expertise with new joiners

Willis Re, the recently established reinsurance brokerage launched by WTW in , is building out its broking expertise of relevance to the insurance-linked securities and third-party reinsurance capital markets.Not a week has passed without news of some new hires into the nascent reinsurance broker which takes a legacy name, Willis Re having previously existed as a brand.Now, some of the additions are coming in areas of relevance to our readership, as Willis Re builds-out senior expertise in industry-loss warranty (ILW) broking, a team of non-marine property retrocession specialists, and experience in ILS backed reinsurance.Numerous recent Willis Re hires have come from Guy Carpenter and these four have all hailed from that source.

There are likely others, but these are just a handful of names that are relevant to ILS and third-party capital that the reinsurance broker has announced in recent days.First and perhaps most notable, Willis Re confirmed the joining of David ‘Larry’ Rothstein, a figure extremely well-known in the industry loss warranty (ILW) market.Larry has 23 years experience in non-marine property reinsurance and retrocession broking, spent all of his career at Guy Carpenter and was best known for his role as co-leader for the ILW practice at that firm.

For almost two decades Larry co-led the ILW and index-broking specialism at Guy Carpenter and Willis Re noted that he, “Is recognised for his deep expertise in the structuring, negotiation and discreet execution of index-based solutions.His client focussed approach has earned him an outstanding reputation with clients, markets and colleagues across the global reinsurance community.” Lucy Clarke, Willis Re Board Member, commented, “Larry brings not only exceptional knowledge but also a good natured and vibrant personality to Willis Re and its business partners.His experience will further strengthen the collaborative culture and specialist capabilities of the business.” Next, Marc Wagdin has also joined Willis Re after a 22 year career at Guy Carpenter, with broad expertise across reinsurance but the broking firm noted “deep expertise in ILS reinsurance.” Most recently Wagdin was the Head of Account Servicing at Guy Carpenter, playing an important role supporting clients predominantly in London and Bermuda.

He had worked in the non-marine property retro team and progressed to Managing Director, becoming a member of the Guy Carpenter Non-Marine Senior Leadership Group.He has “deep expertise across both property retrocession and catastrophe direct & facultative placements,” Willis Re explained.Clarke said, “Simon is highly regarded for the positive impact he has on organisational culture, combining a personable and calm leadership style with a strong work ethic, and we are delighted to welcome him to Willis Re.” Finally, from this batch of additions, Charlie Hall has joined Willis Re from Guy Carpenter, where she worked most recently in the Bermuda market.
