MS Amlin, the Lloyd’s global re/insurer has appointed former Nephila executive and insurance-linked securities (ILS) expert Darren Toh as a Senior Underwriter within its Asia Pacific division, as the company continues to expand its presence and invest in strategic growth across the region.Toh, who is based in Singapore, brings close to a decade of experience from Nephila Capital, one of the world’s largest and longest-standing ILS managers, Most recently, he served as Head of Insurance, and Senior Underwriter (Treaty) at the ILS manager.Toh joined Nephila back in 2016, first as an intern on the research side at Nephila Advisors, where he worked at the ILS managers San Francisco office, before moving into a full-time role at Nephila Capital as a Junior Portfolio Analyst, based in Nashville, Tennessee, in 2017.In 2018, Toh became a Portfolio Analyst at Nephila, before making the move to live in Bermuda, where he transitioned into a trading strategy related role at the firm a year later.
A couple of years later, Toh was then promoted to Portfolio Strategist at Nephila Capital, before going on to become a Senior Portfolio Strategist in 2021.Both of these roles gave Toh more oversight of insurance and reinsurance-linked investment portfolios.In 2022, Toh then stepped across to Nephila’s Climate team, where he once again served as a Senior Portfolio Strategist, however this was only for a temporary period.
In his new role at MS Amlin, Toh will report to William Ho, Chief Executive Officer (CEO), MS Amlin APAC, and also support the continued development of the firm’s reinsurance property catastrophe portfolio.Toh’s industry expertise will be of great value to MS Amlin, as he will be able to assist the firm in any future sidecar transactions, an area in which MS Amlin has been active in recent years.Earlier this year, the re/insurer returned to the capital markets for a fifth renewal of its collateralized catastrophe quota share reinsurance sidecar vehicle Phoenix Re, As a reminder, you can view details of many reinsurance sidecar investments and transactions over the history of the ILS market in our comprehensive list of .
Alongside Toh’s appointment, MS Amlin has also announced two additional hires for its APAC branch, with both Yosuke Yasuda and Amirul (PJ) Ashraf joining as Senior Underwriter and Underwriter, respectively.Yasuda joins the firm from broker Aon, where he previously served as Head of Casualty for Asia and China, where he led growth initiatives and advised cedants across the region.Additionally, he also spent 17 years at reinsurer Swiss Re, where he served as a Casualty Lead Underwriter.
According to MS Amlin, Yasuda’s appointment is effective October 13, 2025, and he will also report to William Ho.Moreover, Ashraf joins MS Amlin from Malaysian Re, where he was primarily involved in international underwriting, risk, and capital management.Ashraf brings a deep level of expertise towards his new role.
