Stonybrook Capital, a specialist investment banking, broking and strategic advisory firm focused exclusively on the insurance and reinsurance industry, has named Dan Butzbaugh as its new Global Practice Leader, Parametric, adding to a raft of recent hiring across the business.Butzbaugh, who has a long-tenure in parametric reinsurance and risk transfer, including in industry-loss warranty (ILW) broking, had previously been a full-time employee at Stonybrook serving as Head of the ILW Desk between 2019 and 2023.He then moved into consulting for the reinsurance broking sector, but became a strategic advisor to Stonybrook in 2024 and now rejoins the investment banking, broking and capital raising specialist in a full-time capacity again to lead its global activities in parametric business. The role at the firm goes beyond broking for Butzbaugh, as the core of Stonybrook’s business remains on the capital raising and investment banking side and the firm is actively raising for a number of parametric businesses at this time, we understand.
Earlier in his career, Butzbaugh held various reinsurance and insurance-linked investment roles, including as the lead on structure products and underwriting at parametric specialist MGA New Paradigm Underwriters, and broker Willis Re where he started his career on the Capital Risk team.Artemis spoke with Joseph Scheerer, Chief Executive Officer | Stonybrook Capital and Risk Management, to understand more about the latest hires and the firm’s ongoing plans to grow the business.Scheerer told us, “Coming off of 2025 which was the second consecutive best year in the history of the firm, we are very focused on the parametric space for 2026 and beyond.
“We added two full time reinsurance brokers in addition to bringing Dan back into the Firm to head up all things parametric.“Alex Fox from BMS as well as Fallon Oeser.Fox, Stonybrook executive vice president, has been a fantastic hire and brings decades of relationships and experience to our broker and is full of energy.
“I could not be any more excited about all of the growth in our reinsurance broking operation and specifically all of the traction we have in the parametric space.“Dan was a strategic advisor but has converted to a full time global practice leader with all of Stonybrook parametric in his vertical, traditional investment banking capital raises and M&A advisory as well.” Scheerer also provided some colour on other areas of core activity for Stonybrook, where he remains excited about the opportunities market-dynamics present for insurance domain specialists in the investment banking world.“Our traditional investment banking practice remains our bread and butter and what we are best known for, raising capital and advising on M&A.
Still, even a lot of that will be in the parametric space. After a five year courtship we were able to land Patrick McFall, a managing director from PWC’s M&A advisory practice in New York and are very excited about that, in addition to vice president, James Greenwood. We have materially bolstered our junior team and are continuing to do so every day.
“Earlier in 2025, two existing team members joined the partnership for the first time and many of the existing partners re’upped their stake including Adam Clay who made a substantial commitment above and beyond his previous ownership.Scheerer summed up, “One team and one dream and we are all rowing in the same direction.I personally could not be any more excited about our future than I am right now.
There is very little quality advisory service in our market and even less now with many of our competitors focused on the frothy IPO market.“The synergy between investment banking and reinsurance broking only increases every year and we are at the forefront of it.”.All of our Artemis Live insurance-linked securities (ILS), catastrophe bonds and reinsurance can be accessed online.
