Catastrophe data aggregator PERILS has published its second industry loss estimate for extratropical windstorm Goretti, also known as Elli, that affected southwestern England, northern France and Belgium in early January, placing the insurance market loss at EUR 479 million.Based on data gathered from the majority of impacted insurers, PERILS’ loss estimate, which covers the property and motor hull lines of business, which was issued by PERILS in mid-February, six weeks after the event end date.“Windstorm Goretti was a very intense extratropical cyclone which generated high winds over the English Channel and affected the neighbouring land areas,” PERILS explained.Northern France, and in particular the departments of Manche and Calvados, and Cornwall at the southwestern tip of England, were most affected by the storm.
As per PERILS, windstorm Goretti also marked the second-largest European windstorm event loss in the 2025/26 season, behind windstorm Nils, which struck one month later.PERILS has confirmed that an updated estimate of the insurance market loss from Windstorm Goretti will be published on July 9th, 2026, six months after the event end date.Luzi Hitz, Product Manager at PERILS, commented: “At this stage, it is relatively safe to conclude that the 2025/26 European windstorm season has ended.
“Like the previous season, the losses experienced were relatively benign, with only two moderately impactful windstorms – Goretti and Nils – exceeding our loss capturing threshold of EUR 300m for any one country or EUR 500m for a Europewide event.” He continued: “While the impact of this season on the re/insurance industry has been more limited, recent history shows that European windstorm seasons can be considerably more severe. For example, the 2023/24 season witnessed Windstorm Ciaran which generated insured losses of EUR 2,067 million at the time, while the 2021/22 season saw a storm series with Dudley, Eunice and Franklin (also known as Ylenia, Zeynep and Antonia) generating a combined loss of EUR 3,851 million.Re/insurers should therefore remain well prepared for the potential of more severe seasons ahead.”.
