Old and New Holiday Traditions for 2020

Holidays are a time filled with traditions – but we all know, 2020 is no traditional year. This season, many traditions that revolve around dinners and parties and other get-togethers with family and friends will have to be put on hold.Does that mean we can’t enjoy any traditions? No! Many are already pandemic-friendly or can be with some slight adjustments.

Some traditions that families can still enjoy together with people in their own household include: Baking cookies at home Driving around to look at holiday lights Building a snowman Caroling in your neighborhood Delivering meals or goodies to friends, family, and neighbors (contactless) These activities will make time spent with your household family extra-special, especially for children, and will make for some great memories. If they’re not already something you do as a family, maybe a new tradition will be born! Of course, we’ll all be spending extra time at home this year, so it might be a great year to add some new “at-home” traditions. If you decorate a tree for the holiday, maybe consider decorating multiple trees? Kids especially might enjoy having their own theme tree, decorated to show off their favorite movie or TV characters, sports teams, or activities.

Holiday cards are also a fun tradition. No matter what holidays you celebrate, many of us are celebrating the end of one year and the beginning of another. This year especially, it might be fun to look for a new theme or even design the cards yourself.

Of course, some traditions are best when we can share them with others. Many people look forward to holiday meals, exchanging gifts, and parties with people they don’t get a chance to see all year.If you do decide to host, or attend, a gathering, the CDC offers some guidelines for things to consider and ways to reduce risk.

Of course, you should also check your local or state regulations for gatherings. If you decide to forgo getting together (definitely the safest option), that doesn’t mean you have to give up the fun! Virtual gatherings are a good way to be “together” without being together.Tools like Zoom, Facebook, and Google Meet, Facetime, etc.

can all be used to meet up with friends and family virtually to watch Christmas movies, play games, or even exchange gifts that you mail ahead of time.Thinking outside the box of at-home parties will also give you the chance to include friends or family that live too far away to show up to the holiday meal. However you choose to celebrate the season, remember to be safe and healthy and enjoy!
